Suppressions

Addresses add themselves to this list — through bounces and spam complaints, not only through someone asking.

The list of people who must not receive marketing messages.

This list always applies

Excluding these people happens inside the send itself, not as a filter that could be forgotten on one campaign. No segment and no campaign can get around it.

Four reasons, and only one of them is manual

  • User request — they clicked the unsubscribe link.
  • Bounce — the email could not be delivered.
  • Complaint — the recipient marked it as spam.
  • Admin — you added them.

The middle two are automatic. So an address can be here without ever having clicked anything, and that is not a mistake — it means sending there again damages your ability to deliver anywhere.

Addresses are normalised

Emails are stored lowercased and phone numbers as digits only. So the same address written differently does not create a second record, and does not slip through either.

Email and SMS are separate

A suppression is recorded per channel. Someone who does not want email may still receive SMS — to stop both, they have to be on the list for both.
