Subscriptions

Subscriptions cannot be created here — a purchase creates them — and automatic renewal only exists on a gateway that supports recurring billing.

Customers' active subscriptions: purchases that are paid periodically rather than once.

This page views and cancels

A subscription is created when a customer buys a product of type "subscription". There is no way to build one by hand here.

Automatic renewal depends on the gateway

Where the gateway supports recurring billing, renewal happens there and the subscription's status is updated from the gateway's side.

Where it does not — common with local gateways — each cycle is its own separate payment and nothing renews automatically; the customer must pay again. "Next billing date" then marks when it falls due, not when money will be taken.

Cancelling also closes access

Cancelling attempts to cancel the subscription at the gateway too, and revokes the membership access tied to it. So cancelling is not a bookkeeping act: the customer loses access immediately.

If the cancellation at the gateway fails for any reason, the local cancellation is still recorded — which makes it worth checking the gateway's own panel once.
